Wills

It is remarkable how few people make Wills.  Many people seem to feel that it is a morbid exercise which only serves to tempt fate.

Death is an inevitable fact of all our lives.  Those who are left behind have many things to face: grief, loss, anxiety, loneliness and so on.  The last thing that  a grieving wife, husband or lover needs when they are having to deal with the loss of someone dear to them, is financial uncertainty or avoidable problems arising from the fact that the deceased left no will.

In one case handled by this firm, a client was very carefully considering what she wanted in her Will.  The process was taking a long time because the detail was so important to her.  Sadly, before she completed her Will she died.  She had always maintained that she had no surviving blood family.  The estate was going to go the Crown.  It transpired that she did have surviving blood relatives.  The process of discovering the identity and whereabouts of all these people was time-consuming and therefore expensive.  Her estate was not large.  Her wishes had been very simple.  Had she survived long enough to make her Will, the costs of administering her estate would have been no more than about £750+VAT and disbursements.  Because she did not make her Will, the costs were well in excess of £6000!

The cost of a Will is modest.  The piece of mind you get from knowing that whatever happens, you have left your estate in order is well worth the cost.

Think of it this way......

Most people go to see a lawyer because a problem has arisen.  Most people would have preferred to have avoided that problem.  Making a Will is an opportunity to avoid a future problem.  A well made Will reduces uncertainty and costs.
